ONE
OF THE SEXIEST VENUES IN TOWN The
Expat - Jul 2006
The Cliff
We absolutely love this achingly cool retreat although we do
hear mixed reports. It has to be one of the sexiest venues in
town - you can't help but feel part of the jet-set perched at
the sleek bar, glass of Champagne in hand, gazing out over the
South China Sea (which looks much better at night, it has to
be said). Seafood is the order of the day, however Chef Armstrong
is accommodating and there do seem to be more meat items on
the menu now. At the moment we love the cardamom seared Maine
scallops, the tasting platter of oysters and the soy-marinated
black cod, Desserts are a highlight. |

DESTINATION
SPA The
Straits Times - Jul 01 2006
Right now, only Spa Botanica on Sentosa fits the bill here as
a destination spa - an establishment with on-site accommodation
that allows guests to indulge in spa treatments for days, even
weeks on end.
Last year, Singapore picked up just four of 41 awards. One was
a local award for Spa of Singapore, which went to Spa Botanica.
CONSISTENT GOOD LOOKS: An outdoor pavilion at Spa Botanica ,
a sprawling garden spa which has won the Singapore Tourism Board's
Best Spa Experience for two consecutive years.
Spa Botanica in Sentosa is Singapore's first and only destination
spa. That means that true blue spa-goers can stay at the affiliated
The Sentosa Resort and Spa next door if they want a few days
of non-stop pampering. But a lazy day spent at this sprawling
garden spa, which has won the Singapore's Tourism Board's Best
Spa Experience for two consecutive years, is rewarding enough.
Sign up for any treatment and you can soak in the mud bath or
jacuzzi all day, on the house, until you are ready to face the
world again. You can tackle the labyrinth, a circular, therapeutic
path of stones that you are encouraged to walk on barefoot to
" clear your mind and energise your spirit", as its publicity
spiel goes. But it did little for my ticklish feet. After that,
I was treated to a Swedish Massage ($125+++ for one hour) in
a charming outdoor hut with piped music. The therapist, a Singaporean
with sturdy hands, rubbed me down with aromatic lavender oil,
focusing on unraveling the knots of tension in my back.
Though the treatment was nothing fancy, her steady kneading
- and chirping of insects around me - lulled me to sleep. I
awoke to find that my skin was allergic to the oil and had broken
out in rashes - no fault of the therapist, of course.
To the therapist credit, she had antidote ready, a cooling lotion
which banished the red bumps.
As it is the closest thing to a resort spa in Singapore, bear
in mind that you pay a premium for the idyllic setting at Spa
Botanica. A thick blanket of greenery blocks out the sound of
passing cars. |

May - Jun 2006
It's hard to believe an island spa can be found so close to
downtown Singapore, but the Sentosa delivers within tropical
woodlands that also overlook the South China Sea. The Beaufort
property's claim to fame is Spa Botanica. Cover yourself in
volcanic mud and let it dry in the sun before dipping into the
mud pool. into the mud pool. Inspired by Tibetan and Chinese
medicine, the five elements cleanse and purify ritual is two

by a Tibetan oil and healing clay massage that eliminates toxins

FOR
A REALLY HEALTHFUL CUISINE Spa
Asia - May to Jun 2006
Diners have an extensive menu to choose from - Chinese or Western
cuisine at The Terrace restaurant. It opens all day to offer
indoor or alfresco dining for up to 150 guests. Children and
vegetarian menus are available too. Two-time "Restaurant of
the Year" winner, The Cliff is where you want to dine on contemporary
cuisine inspired by the sea in a "zen" alfresco setting. Designed
by Japanese architect Yasuhiro Koichi, The Cliff features cascading
water features, split-level platform and a show kitchen built
over a lush jungle. The 180-degree view of the South China Sea
is complimentary. For a really healthful cuisine, the Spa cuisine
would give good options. Then there is The Pavillon where tea
is served by the water's edge. Great idea this is, sipping a
drink while sighing with contentment and watching the sun set
on the western horizon. It's what The Sentosa Resort & Spa is
all about.. indulgence at its best! |

THE
CLIFF AT THE SENTOSA RESORT & SPA VOTED THE MOST ROMANTIC RESTAURANT
Medical Grapevine - Apr to
May 2006
As you walk along the passageway impressively built over water
and illuminated by the warm glow of candlelight four columns
of glass and through the long water curtain wall, you realize
that The Cliff ignites romance that no same human being can
resist. It is no wonder then that it was voted The Most Romantic
Restaurant by IS Magazine's annual readers' choice awards in
2005.
Elegantly perched on a bold precipice overlooking the sea, The
Cliff at The Sentosa Resort & Spa, which was also awarded New
Restaurant of the Year in 2004 and 2005 by the World Gourmet
Summit, spares no effort in getting the ambience right for the
perfect dining experience. Nothing is left to chance. Everything
is perfectly put together and goes beyond the ambience into
the food.
FACE BEHIND IT Trained in classical French cooking, chef de
cuisine Shawn Armstrong has worked in some of the best seafood
specialty restaurants around the globe, including those in the
US, Hong Kong and the Maldives. He believes his creations should
mirror the flavor of the region and yet maintain a balance between
trend and personal style. And so, seasoned ingredients play
a main role in his culinary ventures, including his favourite
, the versatile mushroom.
This former Texas fireman co-wrote "Seafood - Recipes from The
Cliff" in 2004 and was recognized by "New Asian Cuisine & Wine"
as Chef of the Month in April 2005. He intends to write a book
that has more in-depth coverage of product varieties and techniques,
and showcases newer trends.
DRINK IT UP A pre-dinner drink can be enjoyed at the bar, where
a 180-degree view at the sea allows you the succulent appetizer
of a beautiful sunrise: A comprehensive wine collection from
various countries featuring the more subtle Old World as well
as the bolder New World wines available.
START IT UP Service is an art and art is in the detail. We kicked
off with an amuse bouche of smoked salmon in an eclectic mix
of salsa and macadamia nougat, splashed with extra-virgin olive
oil, and knew we were in for a gastronomical treat. Choice breads
like caraway, multigrain and ciabatta are served with a dash
of olive oil and a mixture of Mediterranean spice consisting
of chili powder, garlic powder, turmeric, paprika, and cumin.
As a first plate, the exquisite combination of shelled crab
in Dijon-curry crème, asparagus gazpacho and microgreens with
lemon was light, refreshing and almost addictive.
THE "Y" (YUMM) FACTOR The central state-of-the-art show kitchen
and the annexed char grill are where the maestro works his magic,
alongside his team. You would be truly spoilt for choice like
we were but don't miss out on the pan-roasted Atlantic cod with
braised lentils, pancetta crisps and spiced onion rings, or
the oven roasted barramundi served with mussel emulsion, chorizo
(sausage), garlic crisps and savoy cabbage.
Ask for the season's feature and you may be delighted with delicacies
like loup de mer (sea bass), the Australian dhufish or hand-picked
scallops from St. Malo, France. We couldn't resist the mouth-watering
combination of caramelized potato dumplings in hazelnut butter,
fresh mushroom and Lava beans either.
What is a romantic dinner without the aphrodisiacal oyster?
Freshly shucked seasonal oysters from Tsarskaya, France simply
delight the senses with their smoothness, while the soft texture
and hint of melon in the Australian Smokey Bay oysters come
together perfectly for an experience in itself, leaving a slightly
sweet finish.
SWEET TOOTH For the chocolate lovers, the Manjari Chocolate
is pure heaven. The rich, warm chocolate tart artfully accompanied
by Tahitian vanilla crème caramel and brandy-butterscotch glace
may be too much for some (not for me!), in which case the lighter
banana bread with banana-hazelnut mousse and a banana fritter
is a good second choice.
HIDDEN SECRET You can also entertain a group of 10 or 12 of
your good friends in the semi private room cozily built in a
quiet pavilion over shallow moving waters. With a soothing wall
of water on one side and a fantastic view of the sea on the
other, what more can you ask for?
OPERATING HOURS The Cliff is open for dinner everyday from 630pm
onwards and they take orders until 10pm. The restaurant may
be the perfect spot for an anniversary, birthday, or even pop
that very important question. |

BEST
OUTDOOR FACILITIES IN SINGAPORE - HANDS DOWN
I-S Magazine - May 12, 2006
This spa has the best outdoor facilities of any in Singapore
- hands down. There are outdoor pavilions (each with its own
Jacuzzi or Japanese spa), a floatation pool, deck chairs-and
a facility where guests can cake themselves in mud, bake in
the sun, and then wash it all off. Best of all, these can be
used for as long as you like on the day of the treatment. To
really splurge, there's Spa Botanica suite, which has Jacuzzi,
lounge area, and balcony. The array of treatments on the menu
is astounding (there's the Vichy shower, a special Thai massage
room and a solid bronze bath, to name just a few), but perhaps
its most distinctive treatment is the Galaxy Steam Bath ($95).
In this steam room, four people relax as three types of mud
and the steam from the Turkish style "oven" work their magic.
But this is not for the bashful, as the only clothing worn are
the disposable paper knickers. |

Spa
Botanica - Best Theme Spa New
Breath - Mar to Apr 2006
Combining modern amenities with its old world charm, Spa Botanica
is Singapore's first garden destination spa and winner of the
Best Spa Experience award by Singapore Tourism Board in 2003
and 2004.
The "garden spa" concept is a unique one, which aims to bring
the spa experience outdoors, drawing on nature and the positive
life energy of plants and water to create a truly healthy environment.
Set on the grounds of The Sentosa Resort & Spa on the idyllic
island of Sentosa, Spa Botanica is built on a heritage site
at a cost of S$10.5 million. Spa Botanica's 14 indoor rooms
are named after local spices and its six outdoor treatment pavilions
are named after popular local floral blooms. Here, guests enjoy
Asia's only mud pools and float pools.
There are two labyrinths - the first in Asia - that encourage
guests to quieten their minds through meditative walks. The
beautiful, individually landscaped gardens that surround the
outdoor pavilions and spa gardens bathe the guests in the sweet
fragrance of flowers and the quiet rustle of nature's sounds.
The Spa Botanica Suite is a luxurious treat with a private outdoor
deck, spacious treatment areas and a hydro-bath. At the Royal
Suite is the King's Bath, a 450kg bath hand-tooled meticulously
from cast bronze to retain the warmth of sensuous milk, floral
or herbal bath.
Each Spa Botanica treatment is carefully designed to maximize
the rich botanical resources of the region such as the Singapore
Flower Ritual.
In September 2005, The Sentosa Resort & Spa was awarded the
URA Architectural Heritage Award, for its restoration of an
old army barrack to house its indoor treatment rooms and outdoor
spa pavilions. In the same week, Spa Botanica won the "Spa of
Singapore" award the SpaAsia Wellness Summit in Thailand.
Individual treatments start from S$125 an hour with outdoor
and indoor facilities included as part of the package. Guests

MALE-FRIENDLY
TREATMENTS. HEAVENLY AND HOLISTIC Changi
Express - Feb 3 to 16 2006
Though not strictly for men-only, Spa Botanica scores highly
for its male-friendly treatments and superb facilities set in
lush tropical gardens. With separate areas for men and women,
we recommend their signature Galaxy Steam Bath. Far from soaking
yourself in some creamy chocolate-although we can't see anything
wrong with that-this treatment follows more traditional cleansing
rituals from Asia and the Middle East. Mud mixed with fragrant
essential oils is applied to the body before being dried and
then removed in a herbal steam bath. Complete the session with
a 45-minute aroma massage. Heavenly and holistic.

Spa Botanica, 2 Bukit Manis Road, Sentosa, tel: 6275-0331
This treatment uses the unusual combination of a sandalwood
scrub and a yoghurt wrap to leave skin polished and moisturized.
It starts off with a relaxing massage, followed by a total body
polishing sandalwood scrub. The scrub is applied all over the
body, with special attention paid to rough and neglected spots
like knees, heels, elbows and underarms. After that, a bowlful
of natural yoghurt is applied all over the body. It smell delicious
but it's also very cold, so be prepared for about three minutes
of the chills as the creamy mixture is slathered on. Chockful
of enzymes, the yoghurt is meant to lighten pigmentation and
soften the skin. You're then wrapped up in a towel for 30 minutes
to let it soak in before you shower off. The 2 ½ hour treatment
(which included a facial while you're lying wrapped in yoghurt)
left skin soft to the touch for days.

BOTANICA iS QUITE AMAZING West
Australian - 28 Jan 2006
The best meal of our recent visit was at The Cliff, the signature
restaurant of our lovely hotel, The Sentosa Resort & Spa, on
Singapore's Sentosa Island. Our spacious junior suite, charmingly
furnished, looked out to green lawns and water features, all
elegantly tropical and peaceful after hectic pace of the city.
The Resort's Spa Botanica is quite amazing. There are spa pavilions,
float pools, steam baths, a Pilates program and a botanical
garden with mud pools and cascading waterfalls.
The Cliff restaurant, planned by famous restaurant designer
Yasuhiro Koichi, sits on the edge of a rock ledge with glorious
views across to the South China Sea.
Chef Shawn Armstrong features contemporary cuisine inspired
by the sea, so we deserted Asian food for a starter of a honey-basted
scallops, then pan-seared barramundi with garlic chips and samphire
risotto. |

NOTHING
SHORT OF SPECTACULAR The
Peak - Vol 22 No. 4
CLIFFHANGER
The earnest call of a lonely young peacock joins the gentle
hum of insects in the warm, humid night air; dark green trees
are lightly illuminated against the dusk sky; and the faint
smell of the ocean lingers amid the vapours from the outdoor
grill
A diner would be hard-pressed to leave such a relaxing ambience.
And that was exactly the intent of Yashuiro Koichi, the designer
of Cliff: a restaurant situated at a corner of Sentosa Singapore
Dark Wood and rattan furniture, trellis canopies and water features
set the restaurant apart. The clever interplay of glass, light,
stone and water instinctively puts one in the mood for long
candlelit dinners. And dinners here are nothing short of spectacular.
Start with an appetizer of mangrove crab, artfully shelled and
arranged with Dijon-curry crème, asparagus gazpacho and micro-greens
with lemon. The sweet flesh of the crustacean is devoid of the
usual 'muddy' aftertaste this delicacy is known for. For the
mains, there is roasted lamb rib eye and grilled Wagyu beef
fillet for meat lovers. But seafood is chef de Cuisine Shawn
Armstrong's specialty. We suggest the W.A sea bass, sautéed
and served with comice pear-parsnip puree, Brussel sprouts and
vanilla sabayon. For an ideal end to a satisfying meal, try
the nougat de Montelimar, a parfait with candied fruits in filo
pastry with fairy floss |

PARADISE
FOUND Spa
Odyssey - May to Jul 2003
Sentosa, the island of serenity, is destined to be a "paradise
found" for Singaporeans in search of an idyllic experience right
at home, minutes away from downtown commercial district. One
of the larger islands of the archipelago, Sentosa has been the
focus of a transformation from a theme park atmosphere to a
recreation island with resorts and residences.
The Spa Botanica , itself an impressive 6,000 sq. meters, is
located in a colonial house from the 1930's which was once the
British Military Administration Office. It is set in the garden
landscape of the Sentosa Hotel, previously known as the Beaufort
Resort Hotel and the sister hotel of the elegant Sukhothai in
Bangkok.
The charm of the hotel, designed by Ed Tuttle, starts at the
lake, where lotus blossoms rest under an ancient tree and the
road inclines up a gentle hill to the entrance of the hotel.
A side road continues on to the spa, situated across from the
rooms and private villas.
The spa features a menu of delicious tropical fruits, juicy
treatments using guava-mango recipes ,aloe vera gel wraps ,
champaka bay scrubs in a base of almond-oatmeal, jasmine coriander
scrubs, aromatic spices, green papaya clay masks, chlorophyll
butter, manuka and kanuka essential oils and fruit and flower
baths, all giving the life to the name Spa Botanica The custom
designed mosaic-lined Galaxy Steam Bath is fashioned after the
traditional Middle Eastern Rassul steam room, painted the turquoise
green of the sea and cobalt blue of the night sky. The tiny-optic
star constellations on the dome of the ceiling replicate the
sky of the northern hemisphere. Any claustrophobic feeling in
the chamber drifts away as the lavender and juniper-infused
steam lifts the spirits, as it did in ancient times to transform
mere mortals to oracles.
Mystic traditions such as these are enjoying a revival in spas,
as body, mind, and soul rejuvenation treatments include more
holistic approaches in regeneration. Even Hippocrates, considered
the father of western medicine, advocated daily aromatic hot
baths, massages and food as medicines.
In the galaxy Steam Bath, slathered in the medicinal chakra
mud, self applied in the ceremonial receptacles, one begins
the ritual of reconnecting with the earth under the night sky,
listening to the sounds of nature and celestial music and being
purified by the light rain that sprinkles from the heavens of
the steam bath chamber. This is all beautifully simulated and
orchestrated reminding us to, from time to time, experience
the real thing.
Mud pools filled with mineral-rich volcanic mud bubble outside
in the garden, You are encourage to apply a generous amount
of the purifying mud to the skin and then bake in the sun before
brushing off the mud and taking a cool rainfall shower.
Another specialty, the intricate Four Hand Massage, calling
for synchronicity and cooperation between the masseuses, was
beautifully executed with gentleness and sweetness, reflecting
the sensitivity of Spa Director Miriam Van Doom who has guided
the vision of Spa Botanica with a true understanding of the
integration of holistic approaches.
The four Hand massage followed a superb exfoliation treatment
in which the therapist meticulously exfoliated between the toes,
behind the ears and other easily over-looked areas including
the elbows and the knees, which often surprising neglected in
exfoliation treatments.
For a royal treatment, the 450 kg King's Bath is hand-tooled
from cast bronze, a comfortably cozy fit for two. Milk, floral
and herbal baths will never be the same, as the waters swirl
and take one into a vortex of deep relaxation. Immerse yourself
in one of the "tub teas" - the flower tub tea of dried flowers
and green tea, the fruit tub tea of rosehip, hibiscus, Echinacea
and dried fruits or the spice tea of sweet fennel, ginger, basil
and cardamom. The two meditative outdoor labyrinths are good
respite to continue the inward journey to transformation as
one walks the ancient pathways designed to replicate the sacred
geometry in the Charles Cathedral in France. The gentle, mindful
walking meditation os meant to initiate a spiral journey into
the realm of the subconscious.
In décor and design, the spa is an eclectic mix, offering a
paradoxical play of traditional and contemporary - from the
coconut shell doors crafted in Bali by KayuKaya, a company which
specializes in legally-logged, eco-timber furniture and materials,
to funky jelly bean colored tiles. |

HANDS-ON
HEAVEN Discovery
- Apr 2003
Spa Botanica sprawls across 6,000 square metres of tropical
gardens, terraces, and treatment villas. It exemplifies key
aspects of the SDC's resort-island vision: low-rise, built to
blend in with the natural environment and offering five-star
treatment. The luscious grounds and landscaped waterfalls conjure
up a world far removed from urban Singapore yet lying just ten
minutes away by taxi. Its Ritual packages offer individuals
and couples massages and beauty therapies in air-conditioned
comfort or open-sided private villas, equipped with outdoor
tubs. Will such spa give those of Thailand and Bali a run for
their money? Only time will tell.
The existing Beaufort Hotel, renamed the Sentosa Resort & Spa,
has added Spa Botanica, the largest in Asia, spanning some 6,000
square metres. |
